Umi Sushi Opens Second Location Along Carroll Creek in Downtown Frederick

Back in April, we first let you know that Umi Sushi, a family-owned modern Japanese restaurant based in Historic Ellicott City, was planning a second location in downtown Frederick.

Now, Umi Sushi Frederick is finally here.

The restaurant will hold its soft opening in the former South Mountain Creamery space along Carroll Creek. South Mountain Creamery closed its downtown Frederick shop in August 2025.

In its announcement, Umi wrote, “Join us for our SOFT OPENING next Wednesday, July 15th to enjoy your favorite parts of UMI — our beautiful space, fresh sushi, and warm hospitality — in a brand new town with brand new surprises!”

The soft opening is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at 50 Citizen’s Way in downtown Frederick.

Umi said preparing its second location has been “a nerve-wracking but insightful journey” that helped the team get to know the Downtown Frederick community. The restaurant said the process included unexpected delays and learning curves that made it difficult for its small family-and-friends team to stick to its original May opening timeline.

“What started in Ellicott City has grown into a second home,” Umi wrote. “We’re so excited to finally expand our UMI family and bring the UMI experience to Frederick!”

For the soft opening, Umi says the first 50 customers will receive exclusive merchandise. The restaurant also plans to offer live music in the evening and complimentary sample items for guests to enjoy.
