Ekiben Frederick Update

Back in May, we shared that Baltimore’s Ekiben would be bringing its bold Taiwanese-inspired flavors—like steamed buns, crispy Thai chicken, spicy tofu, and their famous tempura broccoli—to 500 N Market Street in Downtown Frederick.

In July, the construction team at Pondosa Projects uncovered unexpected structural problems, which required installing bracing, closing sidewalks, and completing demolition under the city’s guidance.

After a period of idleness, there’s finally good news. On September 3, Pondosa Projects announced:

“I’m happy to report that our project received approval from the Historic Preservation Commission last week, and the Building Department issued our new permit yesterday. We are good to go! The site will be very busy for the next several weeks as we try to get back on track after two months of idleness. We will be demolishing about 80% of the structure and preparing to start building its replacement. We expect construction to last about six months, with all of the exterior work complete by the end of 2025, and hopefully the restaurant will open in February or March of 2026.”

What’s Next:

Roughly 80% of the existing structure will be demolished to make way for the new build.

Construction is expected to last about six months, with exterior work wrapping up by the end of 2025.

If all goes to plan, Ekiben Frederick will open its doors in February or March of 2026.
