Brickworks Development Moves Forward with Whole Foods Likely to Anchor

Back in November 2023, we let you know that Frederick’s Planning Commission approved a master plan for the highly anticipated Brickworks development — a transformative mixed-use project slated for the east side of Frederick on the historic site of the former Frederick Brick Works facility.

Now, there’s a major update: the city granted final site plan approval for the first two lots in the development during a Planning Commission meeting in May. Marking a significant step forward in bringing the project to life.

The Brickworks development spans over 64 acres and is set to include up to 1,260 residential units and 130,000 square feet of retail space. The name pays homage to the Frederick Brick Works, once known for producing the materials that helped shape the city’s distinctive charm.

The newly approved lots — Lots 4 and 6, located at the corner of East Street and Monocacy Boulevard — will serve as early anchors for the community.

  • Lot 6 will feature a three- to five-story residential building with 340 multi-family units on 4.52 acres.
  • Lot 4 is planned to host over 73,000 square feet of retail space in three multi-tenant buildings across 9.27 acres — including a nearly 37,000-square foot grocery store that is widely speculated to be Whole Foods, though that has not yet been officially confirmed. An online real estate brochure previously revealed that a lease had been signed by the supermarket chain at the upcoming Brickworks site — however, the brochure has since been taken down.

While there’s still no official timeline for construction or additional tenants, this approval marks a pivotal moment for the project. We’ll continue to keep you posted with more details as they emerge.
