Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau in March shows that Frederick County had the most significant population increase in Maryland. This occurred between July 2020 and July 2023. According to the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2023 estimates, Frederick County’s population grew from 272,786 in 2020 to 293,391 in 2023. This signifies a 7.5% increase over the three-year period.
The county’s growth was particularly rapid between 2020 and 2021, adding 7,861 new residents. While the growth rate slowed slightly in following years, Frederick County continued to outpace both Maryland and the national average.
In fact, Frederick County’s population growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.03%, exceeding the state’s 0.26% increase and the national average of 0.29%.

The new data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals a significant population surge in Frederick County between 2020 and 2023. During this period, the county’s population grew by a remarkable 7.55%, far surpassing the state of Maryland’s 0.11% increase.
Frederick County’s growth rate was also substantially higher than that of neighboring counties. Carroll County experienced a 2.14% increase, while Howard County grew by 0.96%. Washington County saw a more modest growth of 0.72%. In contrast, Montgomery County’s population declined by 0.23%.
