Fundraiser Launched To Save Frederick’s First Spire and City Clock Tower

The iconic spire atop Trinity Chapel, one of the five featured on the Frederick city seal, is in critical need of repair. Founded in the very same year as Frederick itself, 1745, Evangelical Reformed Church and the Trinity Chapel would later build this stone structure in 1763. Today, it not only serves as a historic landmark but also houses the official clock of the city.

The Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, which owns the spire (though the city owns the clock itself), is facing a $1 million restoration project to preserve this significant piece of Frederick’s heritage.

The church has already secured half the funds, but needs an additional $500,000 through community donations and grants. The original estimate was lower, but a closer inspection revealed the need for more extensive work on the spire, lantern, clock, belfry, and roof. Durable Restoration Company, experienced in historic building preservation, will lead the project.

This spire is more than just a landmark; it’s a symbol of Frederick’s history dating back to its founding year. Donations will ensure its continued presence for generations to come.
