Back in November, we let you know that a potential overhaul and redesign of the popular Hill Street Skate Park in West Frederick was up for discussion at a Mayor & Board of Aldermen public workshop. The board all agreed that the park needs a complete renovation to potentially become a destination location for skateboarders while also serving as a park for the rest of the local community to use. There was also mention of including public art, a stage area, and a pump track within the park. Details of the project will come as part of the city’s planning process and a community group will be formed to help with the projects development, according to one of the Aldermen.
On May 18th, the Frederick City Aldermen unanimously voted to approve the city’s FY 2024 spending plan. A portion of the $190 million budget includes an additional $1.5 million of funding to establish a project for renovations to Hill Street Park in the Hillcrest neighborhood—bringing the total budget for the project to $3 million, including federal & state grants. Project timelines are unknown at this time. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
Also included in the newly approved budget is an additional $100,000 for park improvements in low-income or minority neighborhoods; $100,000 in improvements to Mullinix Park; $150,000 for a manager of public art for the city; and an additional $50,000 for the Golden Mile Alliance.
The budget also includes $41.9 million for the Frederick Police Department, $1.49 million for the mayor’s office, $5.6 million for parks, and nearly $2.7 million for the Weinberg Center for the Arts.
