Starlink Satellites Seen Over Frederick

A string of lights were seen streaming across the sky in Frederick, MD and other parts of the country on Thursday (May 4th) evening.

According to experts, “the lights were actually Starlink Satellites launched into space on Thursday morning by The Space rocket. Batches of these satellites help provide low-cost internet to rural locations around the world.

The bright lights you see are not lights on the satellites. That’s inbound sunlight reflecting off the antennas and back to Earth. Eventually, the satellites will be turned into a “shark-fin” position so the satellite’s knife-edge is to the sun. This will reduce reflected light from reaching the earth making it much more difficult to see.

This is being done so it isn’t too bright for astronomers and astrophotographers to observe, study and document the night sky.”
